Filming Progress
I am happy with the way in which my filming went and feel I have some successful shots to use within the video. I still have the dancing shots to film however so hopefully these will go as well as the rest have.

Feedback from Fonts
I came accross the issue that the source I had sampled the fonts from would not allow me to type in those fonts and therefore had to find one as similar as possible on the available programme. These were therefore fonts that I then sampled....

Reflection
Having dancing in the video should work well as it adds a delicateness and feeling through movement to the song. Being autumnal weather this should fit in well with the theme of my video and the look I want to create. It would be useful if I had fairly good weather whilst filming, this can't be garunteed but I can try ant time it right.
I hope to use different times of day to film my video which would help show more of a contrast in time. Weather would also vary also representing this however i hope to have nice weather for most of the filming.
My main aim is to make the video as naturalistic as possible, this will make it have a sense of feeling as well as emotion behind it and create the alternative and delicate feel i want to create, almost a sense of innosence.

Ancillary Ideas
- Bright and fun colour scheme
- Pastel colours could be used
- Main picture on the front cover to be of 'artist', in naturalistic environment ( could be a freeze frame from video or a serparate photo) - Plan to have the 'artist' dressed in summery type dress with long wavy hair in a field looking away from the camera
- In the RMA's I analysed, I found that the double page spread with a photo on one side and lyrics on the other worked well; this is the technique I will use. The page with the lyrics in on will have a pastel blue background and lyrics in white, to invisage a sky type scene linking in with the video.
Album Advert...
- This will link in with my digipak colour scheme as well as the video.
- I will use a pastel blue background with elements of white font and the same photo used on the front of the digipak.
- It will full a full A4 page
- It is important that not too much information is included, just basic information necessary to encourage the consumer to buy the album.

Ideas
Some of the songs I considered were...
Ed Sheeran - The City
This song by Ed Sheeran does not have a music video and has not yet been in the charts, therefore making it a suitable song to make a video for.
The song lyrics refer to back streets and a city enviornment, this would enable me to find a suitable setting to film the video.
It is quite a soft song, not the sort of song where dancers would be required, I would most likely use one actor.
Kate Nash - Don't You Want To Share The Guilt?
This song by Kate Nash fits my alternative genre and does not have a music video or chart history in the past five years, making it a suitable song to potentially create a music video for.
A variation of settings could be used depending in which way Ichoose to interpret the song. There is a variation of tempo's also enabling me to encooperate more technical skills.
Kate Walsh - Your Song
This song by Kate Walsh again does not have a chart history or a music video. This therefore makes it a suitable song to create a music video for.
The song is soft, and very alternative, it is open to inspiration with a variation of oppurtunities within the lyrics to use different scene settings and movement.
I would only need one actor in the video, it would be very much focused on them as the 'artist' and the feeling being given from the lyrics, giving the audience more of an understanding of the meaning of the song.

Research Informing Planning
- These showed me people's favourite way to consume music videos and where they did this, allowing me to understand where I should be aiming for.
- They also showed me people's favourite genre of music and the videos they thought to be the best out currently.
- I also learnt what consumers find pleasing to the eye for album covers as well as for the adverts in the magazine.
- I now know the amount of information consumers want on their adverts advertising the new album.
Artefacts
- I was able to see how other alternative artists' music videos are put together. This therefore gave me ideas for my own video.
- I found that there are ways of making a music video simply however effectively as long as it fits well with the style of the song.
- I now know more techniques than I did previously that I could encooperate into my music video.
Focus Group
- I was able to hear views from other people as well as my own analysis on a music video, this helped as different peoples opinions vary.
- I could pick up on more criticisms than just my own and things to remember when making my own music video.
Product Placement
- I found out that channel AKA was the most popular music channel amongst those I asked, therefore meaning this is a channel I would want to used amogst the music channels.
- Youtube is a very popular way for consumers to view music videos and it is at no cost therefore a successful method of promoting the artist, their song as well as album.

Product Placement
Through my questionairre's I found that the most common way for a consumer to watch music was through the internet, the most popular website being youtube. Youtube is a good source for record labels to use, it is completely free to everyone therefore meaning that the artists' music video can be viewed by anyone with no cost to the record label or consumer. This therefore means a large amount of people are likely to view it over youtube, giving the artist a vast amount of promotion at no cost - therefore making it a popular place for the video to be streamed over.
However, this was closely followed by consumers watching music channels to view artists' music videos; the top two being Channel AKA and Kerrang, however over 50% of those answering the questionairre said that they were most likely to watch Channel AKA, making it a desirable channel for my music video to be placed on. However I would also want my music video to be played on other music channels such as Kerrang, MTV and VIVA to ensure that as many audiences as possible are being reached.
For my promotional advert I also need to ensure that as many audiences as possible are reached, therefore I will be using my advert for the album in a magazine to do this which is why it is important that the advert is eye catching and informative at a glance. To attract the audience of the correct genre however I would want to place it in a magazine such as NME, where alternative artists are discussed and advertised and very much focus's on the 'alternative'/indie genre. Another magazine I could place it in would be Q, however I would be unlikely to place it in a magazine such as 'top of the pops' as it is the wrong genre and therefore the consumers quite possibly would just ignore the ad.
My Digipack will be largely designed and created to attract an audience of 'alternative' music however it is also important that it attracts other audiences to try and boost sales. However, I am likely to place it in well knows retail stores, especially HMV along with WHSmith as well as supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda etc. Often digipacks are divided into genre's within the store, especially HMV therefore consumers of that genre are likely to find it however it is also possible to have it placed on stands near the front of the store where 'newly released' albums are often placed; this would be an advantage to me as consumers are more likely to notice the digipack meaning more chance of sales.
Focus Group
I asked a group of people some questions on what they thought of the video cosmic love by Florence and the Machine, and asked for their positive and negative thoughts on the video.
The group all said how they thought the video was well suited to the song and they liked how Florence was the main focus throughout the video.
"The song is almost spooky in aspects, its very unusual and individual; the video is very much what you would expect from the song, it has eerie aspects to it"
"Although the video is mainly Florence dancing and singing, it is very effective. It is a fairly simple video however the song refers to love and emotion which is very much portrayed through the mirrored scenes where she almost throws herself about with views from all mirrors; these connotations suggest how love can cause your emotions to be all over the place".
Did the video help your understanding of the song?
- Yes showed how the song is very emotional.
- The way in which it is portrayed helped me understand the song and enabled me to focus more on the lyrics of the song, getting a better understanding of it.
- When listening to her songs previously, I have been unsure on her as an artist however watching the video changed my opinion, she is quirky and individual which i like.
- The video is dramatic which highlighted to me the dramatism of the lyrics.
What criticisms do you have of the video?
- Although the video is effective and works with the song, there could have been more variation in scenes as the video seems to flick between similar scenes repeatedly.
- The video works well with the song but I wouldn't say it stands out to me memorably, more props or dancers could be used to add even more effect.
- The video is fairly simple there could have been more variation.
Favourite parts of the video?
- The way in which the mirrors are used to show all angles is clever, you have to concentrate to understand what is happening, its an unusual but effective technique to grab attention from the audience.
- The way in which she emerges from the leaves/tree's is effective, it adds to the eerieness and suits the song well.
- The twinkling and flickering of the lightbulb at the beginning and end is effective, it introduces and closes the song well as it is almost mysterious.
- Through having Florence dance it shows her as an artist and almost her image.
The comments show how overall the group liked the video and there were many positive comments. The group liked the simplicity of the video and how it set the scene for the song making it more understandable. However a point was made about always going back to the same scenes; the video is more of a concept video as oppose to narrative therefore this is not unusual however there could be room for more variation. Furthermore, videos by alternative artists are often individual to them and slightly quirky or different which is also what makes this a very effective video. It may be simple but it simply creates a picture and understanding for the consumer of the song and of the artist.
Media Artefacts
The front cover of the album/digipack suggests the alternative genre through the scene being fairly 'quaint' or different. The font used for the artists name and album title is not a standard front you would usually expect on an album cover, it almost looks like handwriting suggesting simplicity which is often linked in with the genre. The cover uses a variation of colours making it eye catching and fitting with the artist, Kate Nash's music is generally upbeat.
The back of the album case, uses the same font as the front, resembling handwriting. The names of the songs are listed over the page on a blue background with white font. Again, this is fairly basic however looks effective at the same time. There is also producer and copyright information in small print at the bottom of the page above the barcode, this is necessary for copyright reasons to the managment and artist.
On the inside double page spread of the front cover a photographic image is used on the right whilst lyrics to songs are written out on the left. Through using the image it allows consumers to follow the artists trends and their overall image/appearance. I expresses the artists personality and meaning to their music enabling consumers to 'follow' them and have an understanding of the artist visually. The image used is unrealistic however individual to her as an artist and perhaps suggests a character who's 'all over the place'; with the scene being set in a bathroom, there are black cats walking through which would suggest the artist has bad luck? Washing is hanging up in the bathroom again suggesting a slightly cluttered lifestyle, there is also a skeleton in the corner which would suggest to the consumer she is quirky much like the overall image she portrays.
The song titles above the lyrics are again in the handwriting style font followed by typed out lyrics simply on a white background in black font. This is effective due to the busy image over the other side of the double page spread.
The front cover of the album is very much individual to Florence as an artist. Through the name of the album being 'LUNGS', an artificial set of lungs have been placed underneath her clothes to represent this and highlight this. The title is then written over the top of this to emphasise the album title informing through wording and image. Many of her songs have a slightly eerie and distinctive feel to them, of which the front cover represents well. She seems to be placed in a natural looking environment which is similar to many of her music videos therefore representing the whole album and her image/style well.
Media Artefacts
LOUISE AUBRIE
The advert is fairly simple however effective and eye catching. The advert is a picture of the artist overlayed by small facts about the album in writing. Although the main structure is a photo of the artist, through editing the colours are appropriate and the focuses are made to be in the correct place; the edges of the photo surrounding the artist are made to be dark fading out to black underneath her and to the bottom of the advert, which allows the writing to stand out without distracting from the photo of the artist.
The only accessories used in the photo is the artist with her guitar and microphone; this gives the consumer an idea of her image or style. The only information on the advert is the necessary information; the artists name, album slogan, album name, producer, her website and then a line is also put in to describe the advert 'Stunning Debut Album Out Now'.
(From NME magazine, 30 October 2010 edition, page 29)
FRIENDLY FIRES
This advert not only has information on the album but it also has the new tour dates for the album; which is giving the artist more oppurtunity of sales in both areas. The advert is fairly simple however eye catching through the image used in the centre of the advert which is the same image used on their album cover. This is placed on a black background which fills the rest of the page. The writing decreases in size as it goes firther down the page, this allows the name of the band at the top of the page to stand out the most, followed by 'The debut album out now'. Songs included in the album are then stated followed by a quote describing the album to help promote good reviews.
Underneath the image at the bottom of the advert is where tour dates are listed. They are placed well as they dont make the page look overloaded with tour dates through almost being seperate to the rest of the advert. Through using one image and black with white writing the advert is bold and stands out and fits well with the genre.

Media Artefacts
Noah And The Whale, 5 Years Time
The music video shows a very basic use of techniques to put together a video that fits well with the song. Some may view it as not being a very good music video however it does work well. They have used a 'home video camera' type style as if it has been filmed as it goes and supposedly not much editing used. However for the style of the song this works effectively and the video is entertaining. There is a main basic scene with a curtain as a backdrop and a '5' balloon in the corner. The video often comes back to this scene, to focus on someone/a group of people and their actions.
Wording is placed over the video for the main words in the chorus of which are changed in each chorus (as shown above). This is effective in that the consumer can not only remember the order in which the word comes with but they have visuals to match it with; it is also pleasing to the eye and adds character to the video.
The video is made to be very much realistic, a bar is used, the backdrop as mentioned before and a park type scene. The video does appear to have been made at quite a low cost as it is fairly basic, however this very much matches the style of the band. Noah and The Whale's songs are not overly edited with backing music and voice changers at all, they are simple however effective and much like the video.
Ed Sheeran, The A Team
The alternative music video is made in black and white, this shows the seriousness of the song and allows the audience/viewer to get a feel for the scenario. The video is focused on one girl, making the lyrics become more understandable as he sings about a girl. Shots from all angles are used to show all persepectives of her as well as the setting the video is being filmed in. Although the video is very simple, it is made effective through the use of her heaving eye make up and facial expression showing the sadness of the song. The camera focuses on the feet of a busy street, this is made relevant to the song through the feet walking in rhythm with the lyrics/song. Blurred lights are used in the background, again this is relevant to the mood of the song but also looks very effective with the girl in the foreground and brings attention to her without making the shot plain.
A technique that I thought to be very effective within this music video was the use of editing to speed up people and traffic to show passing time, it not only visually looked good to the audience but also showed how the girl was still in the same position, again, emphasising the lyrics of the song and the difficult time being described.
The shots used lasted a few seconds on average, midshots were often used on the girl as her face was a main focus through the use of her facial expression and stage make up to show how she was in a bad place. Shots lasted a couple of seconds, this allows the audience to take it in properly and understand the song in a better way than which they did before viewing the video.
Kate Nash, Foundations
The alternative music video presents a range of different shots and techniques. It uses a narrative style to fit with the song and emphasise the lyrics to the audience/viewer. The start of the video shows a mid shot of each character in turn repeatedly, this places effect on the fact the song is describing these two people and connotations of relationship issues. The focus always goes back to Kate Nash, the artist throughout the music video to highlight her as an artist, as well as her style which is what the audience often look for. The video is made quirky through the use of bright colours in the setting as well as clothing and accessories, this fits well with the alternative, upbeat song.
An over the shoulder shot is used showing her reflection in the mirror, this highlights her as the artist and allows the audience to focus on her style and appearance. During her singing close ups are often used, again because she is the main focus of the video, the aim is to promote her and this tends to be what the audience looks for also. High angle shots are used, specifically in the scene where she is lying on a spiral staircase, her facial expression and positioning shows sexual connotations as well the feel of superiority she gives off, linking in with the song to do with her relationship.
Real objects are made to be animated allowing them to ‘move’, this again fits in with her alternative style as it is quirky and different, making the video memorable and helping to promote her as an artist. To highlight the lyrics objects are used within the video, adding to its narrative style; when ‘wind you up’ is sung, she winds up a wind - up figure which has an obvious link for the audience. Again, when she sings the line ‘you say I must eat so many lemons, ‘cause i am so bitter’; Kate is behind a pile of ‘eaten’ lemons and continues to bite into one.
Questionairre's and Results
1. Are you male or female?

The results show that more of those participating in the questionairre were male, which could have some effect on the results however it is not a significantly big difference.
2. Age......
From the results it can be seen that the age group with the most participants was 19-30, followed by 11-18; this shows that it was more of a younger generation answering the questionairre which could alter preferences to taste however this is still a fairly wide age category.
3. Do you watch music videos?
This result shows us that a majority do watch music videos; it could be possible that the seven of which answered no could be those in the older age categories? Younger people could be more likely to watch music videos due to wanting to follow artists looks, being more familiar with the internet etc. However the result does show that music videos are vastly popular.
If so, how many do you watch per week...
The most amount of people said that they watched between 6 and 10 music videos per week, averaging to approximately one a day, however nine people also said they watched
between 11 and 15 per week which is double that and 8 people said between 0 and 5. This result shows that this number varies accross the board and changes completely depending on the person and potentially their spare time? Only three people said they watch more than 16 music videos per week which shows that this is perhaps unusual.
4. How would you watch music videos?
50% of those that answered said that they watched music videos over the internet, whilst only 2 said that they used artists websites to view their music videos and the rest said that they used the music channel. This result shows us that there are many sources other than artists websites to view a variety of music videos and that perhaps artists websites aren't something used very often by the consumer.
5. Which music channel are you most likely to watch?
Over 50% said that they are most likely to watch channel AKA, this shows that it is a popular music channel and well established/well known. The next most popular was Kerrang however starz and Kiss were not chosen by many, possibly because of the genre of music played or the amount of videos they play, (could have frequent advert breaks).
Only two came up in peoples answers, almost all still answered with youtube and only 3 answered with mtv. This shows how much media control youtube holds and how frequently consumers use it. They have access to almost all music videos of all artists and genres on one website, therefore making it very popular amongst consumers.
Almost 25% said that they are most likely to listen to R&B and 25% said Pop. The next most popular was alternative, followed by a few answering for other genre's. These tend to be the most popular genre's in the chart therefore this result corresponds with national popularity of genre.
Although the results show that people preferred music videos from bands, there isn't a big difference in the results. Solo artists also got a good amount of preferability. This shows that it is more personal preference however bands could have come out on top as their music videos show image of more artists as well as having more going on in the video.
9. Why do music videos appeal to you?
Almost half of the participants said that music videos appeal to them to keep up with the artist. Just under 25% answered either Having visuals to link with the music or following artists latest look. These results show us how Keeping up with the artist is important to consumers, they like to understand what is going on in their lives and their overall image.
10. What is one of your all time favourite music videos?
This result shows us that people have their own individual, personal favourites. However it is clear that some of the favourite videos are from the current charts, therefore showing that this could be because they are at the front of their mind due to being current to now. The most popular music video was by Katy Perry, Last Friday Night (of which is currently in the charts); however this music video has a unique edge to it, it is much longer than most other music video and takes narrative to an extreme making it memorable, entertaining and clearly popular.
11. What type of music video do you most enjoy watching?
Ancillary Results...
1. Age...

This shows me that in my questionairre I had a variation of age groups participating; however the results do show that almost half were between the age of 11 and 18 which would mean the results are more so slanted to the younger generation. I will keep in mind that the older the age group, the less people I managed to find to participate.
2. Gender...

This result shows that it was almost 50% of each gender however slightly more males answered than females. This result is not top heavy enough for me to need to take that into consideration however as it is such a small difference.
3. Does the cover of an album encourage you to buy it?

This result shows that the majority of people said that the cover of the album would encourage them to buy it; consumers are drawn in by what they see, therefore if an album cover is eye catching and appropriate to the artist they are more likely to buy it as they can't necessarily listen to any of the album so they have to go by appearance. However from looking at my completes questionairres it would seem that the older the person, the more likely they were to answer no; this could be because they have more of a refined music taste and know what albums they wish to buy.
4. On an album cover what sort of colours would you be looking for?

The most amount of people said that they would be looking for bright colours, this could be linked with the fact that the album cover needs to be eye catching for its audience; six people out of 30 also said they would like a mixture of colours which again would be eye catching and possible suitable for a variety of audiences. However, another six people said they would be looking for dark colours, although this could be linked in with the genre of music that appeals to them.
5. On an album cover what sort of font would you look for if the genre were to be 'alternative'?

Just over half of the people asked chose either pretty/delicate or curly; showing that this is what people link in with being alternative, perhaps quirky. This could show a difference to the expected font on album covers which could be bold, italic etc. Other options were chosen however not as popular and could be more to do with personal preferance accross the board.
6. Do you prefer album covers with or without a photo of the artist on it?

The majority of people asked decided that they preferred album covers with a photo of the artist on it. This could be to do with the fact that many people like to follow artists image or have a new visual to link the music to. The results show that this is a popular want from the audience for an album cover and therefore could be a major aspect to help sell the album. Through having the photo the consumer can also easily see who the album is by when browsing in a retail store.
7. What would attract you to an artist's advert in a magazine?

50% of those asked said that an equal amount would attract them to the advert; the picture could catch the consumers eye however they would be looking for information on the product to allow them to have the option of buying the product knowing details about it - therefore writing is necessary. however over 1/3 said that mainly picture would attract them, this could be to do with attraction to the artist or again, following the artists image.
8. What colours would you like on the advert for an 'alternative' genre?

Almost 25% of people chose black as being a colour that they would want, this again could be because it could be slightly quirky fitting in with the alternative genre however just over 25% also said they would want bright colours which shows another view to 'alternative' showing how it is a varied genre of music suiting a range of people.
9. How much information about the album being advertised would you expect on the advert?

The results show that a variation of information is wanted, however they do show that the audience would want the information kept brief on the advert and not long sentences but quotes and song names etc as shown - almost 1/3 said they would want named chart hits of the album on the advert.
